MAMIRAUÁ PROJECT

The Mamirauá fishing community was established in 2023 at the initiative of some members of the Boca do Mamirauá community and Zyba Agency. The purpose of the project is to create a source of income for communities through recreational fishing and ecotourism, which would bring a sustainable source of income to the region throughout the year and replace more common activities in the area.

Developing new forms of livelihoods with communities through training in various tourism sectors, improving the quality of life for local families.

SUSTAINABILITY

The project is based on sustainability and improved utilization of natural resources in the region. Starting from 2024, plastic packaging will no longer be used in the communities, and by 2026, 100% of our energy will come from solar panels.

In recreational fishing, 100% of the fish caught are released back into their natural environment.

FISH SPECIES IN THE MAMIRAUÁ RESERVE

ARAPAIMA

Arapaima “gigas”, also known as Pirarucu, is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, measuring over 2.4 meters long and weighing over 100 kilograms. It is abundant in the region and is a very aggressive and widely distributed fish species, practically caught in every lake within the project and in large numbers in the channels of the Japurá River.

AROWANA

It is an expert in surface feeding. It is also an excellent jumper and aggressive when taking bait from the water’s surface in imitation of insects such as grasshoppers, cicadas, and crickets. Also known as Sulamba or Water Monkey among the locals of the region, they can be found in large quantities in some lakes of the project; some specimens are over 80 cm long.

PEACOCKBASS

Popularly known as Popoca, this species is found in several locations in Brazil, although in the project’s lakes, it can grow over 50 cm and reach 4 kilograms. One of the most sportive fish in Brazil, which can be caught using artificial lures.

PIRAPITINGA

Pirapitinga or Caranha is a fish species from the Characidae family, native to the Amazon. A strong fish that offers a lot of resistance during the fight. They are found in large schools in lakes, and can be caught with surface water lures and imitations of insects and fruits.

TAMBAQUI

Fish with scales with high economic value for the region due to the quality of the meat. They are extremely strong and feed on insects, fruits, and small fish, reaching weights of up to 30 kilograms.

 6-DAY FISHING PROGRAM / 10 NIGHTS

DAY 1 – 8.11.2024

The journey begins with arrival in the Brazilian city of Manaus-AM. Private transport will be waiting for us at the airport to take us to the Quality hotel, where we will spend the night.

DAY 2 – 9.11.2024

After breakfast, you have a free day and, of course, time to explore and experience the city of Manaus.

Overnight at the Quality hotel.

DAY 3 – 10.11.2024

After breakfast, we will head to the Manaus International Airport with organized private transport, where we will catch a flight to the city of Tefé-AM, located in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest.

Upon arrival in Tefé, our private transport will be waiting for us at the airport to take us to the port, from where we will travel by boat towards the community of Boca do Mamirauá (approximately 90 minutes).

DAY 4 / 9 – 11., 12., 13., 14., 15., 16.11.2024

After breakfast, pairs will go fishing in the lakes and channels of the community. All locations will be predetermined by the community staff and fishing guides.

DAY 10 – 17.11.2024

Breakfast served at the Casa do Caboclo lodge, followed by a boat ride to Tefé. We will then take a flight to Manaus, where our adventure in the Brazilian rainforest will come to an end.

Overnight at the Quality Hotel, Manaus-AM.

DAY 11 – 18.11.2024

After breakfast, we will head to the Manaus-AM airport and bid farewell to Brazil. We will fly back home with memories of an unforgettable adventure.
