Rivers in Slovenia

The rivers in Slovenia fall into the Adriatic and Danube river basins and contain a considerable common number of fish species. Some species, however, are typical only of a specific catchment area.​

Rivers of the Adriatic basin

The River SOČA and its tributaries is the main Slovenian river of the Adriatic basin. The most distinctive and well-known fish species of the Adriatic catchment are the marble trout and Adriatic grayling.

Rivers of the Danube basin

The River SAVA with its tributaries is the main Slovenian river of the Danube basin, with distinctive species including the Danube salmon, brown trout and grayling.

Soča

River Soča and it’s tributaries are a paradise for fly-fishing. The famous marble trout, grayling and rainbow trout are the fly fishers’ favourites.

Sava Bohinjka

The Sava Bohinjka River is a lovely Alpine river that flows out of Lake Bohinj, running through a narrow valley at times squeezed into a gorge. This river is home primarily to salmonids such as the brook trout, grayling, rainbow trout, Danube salmon (or huchen).

Krka

The living environment of the river Krka is rich in all its aspects. The resident fish enjoy a good assortment of food over the whole year and in combination with relatively stable water temperatures this is an ideal stable growing environment for brown trout and rainbow trout.

Idrijca

The Idrijca is a hidden gem for those seeking peace and good fishing. Its clear waters are home to special types of marble trout, grayling, brown trout and rainbow trout.

Lepena

Lepena is left tributarie of river Soča where you can find some nice marble trout and rainbow trout.

Kamniška Bistrica

Kamniška Bistrica is home primarily to salmonids such as the brown trout, grayling, rainbow trout, Danube salmon (or huchen).

Tolminka

Tolminka is a freestone Alpine river close to Tolmin, known for big rainbow trouts, graylings and marble trouts.

Vipava

The great majority of anglers flocking to river Vipava prefer fly-fishing. This ancient angling method is used mostly to catch trout and other salmonids.

Dreta

A small tributary to Savinja near Gornji Grad. Very excellent fly fishing for grayling and wild brown trout.

Meža

The Meža is a river in the Austrian state of Carinthia and in Slovenia, a right tributary of the DravaMeža river is home primarily to salmonids such as the brown trout, grayling and rainbow trout.

Radovna

The Radovna river is a tributary to the Sava Dolinka near lake Bled. Radovna river is home is home primarily to salmonids such as the wild brown trout. Wild brook trout and rainbows can also be found.

Lipnica

The alpine creek Lipnica is the Sava’s first tributary on the right side after the confluence of the Sava Bohinjka and the Sava Dolinka. It flows into the Sava in the vicinity of the village Ovsiše. Lipnica river is home primarily to salmonids such as the brown trout and rainbow trout.

Ižica

The Ižica (aka Iščica) is an enchanting valley carst river and managed by the Fisheries Institute of Slovenia . You can peacefully fish for brown trouts and grayling, carps and pikes.

Unica and Malenščica

The Unica river, managed by the Fisheries Institute of Slovenia, is considered one of the most beautiful fly fishing areas in Slovenia for my Fly fishing guiding service. Reka
