Guided fly fishing means a day on the river with a local guide who picks the water, helps with tackle and technique, and improves your chances of a good fish.
Hiring a guide is the fastest route to good fishing on unfamiliar water. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced angler visiting Slovenia for the first time, a local fly fishing guide knows the water, the fish and the rules, so you can focus on fishing and enjoying the day. Here is what a day with us looks like.
Before the trip: planning and preparation
It all starts with a conversation. We want to know your experience, the fish you would like to catch and how you like to fish. Based on the season and water levels we choose the river and district, help with your fishing permit and tell you what to bring.
How the day unfolds
- Morning: we meet at the river or drive there together, check your tackle and talk through the plan.
- Late morning: reading the water, choosing flies and first casts. Beginners learn casting and wading basics; experienced anglers get tactics for that specific water.
- Lunch: a break by the river, with time to talk, take photos and recharge.
- Afternoon and evening: often the best part of the day, when fish start rising.
We always adapt the rhythm of the day to conditions and to you. Some guests want to fish from dawn to dusk, others prefer to combine fishing with exploring the valley.
What you will learn
- how to read the water and find fish,
- how to choose the right fly for the current hatch,
- techniques such as dry fly, nymphing and streamer fishing,
- how to release fish properly so they survive,
- local rules and river etiquette.
Tackle
If you do not have your own tackle, we can arrange rental gear. If you do, bring it along and we will help you get more out of it. You will also need waders and wading boots, polarised sunglasses and a cap. See our fly fishing gear checklist.
