Huchen Fly Fishing in Slovenia – Winter Hunt for the Danube Salmon

The huchen, or Danube salmon, is the winter trophy of Slovenian fly fishing. It lives in Danube-basin rivers and is fished with heavy tackle and big streamers.

When trout season closes on most Slovenian waters in autumn, something special begins for the most dedicated fly anglers: the hunt for huchen. The huchen (Hucho hucho), or Danube salmon, is Europe’s largest salmonid and a true legend of Slovenian rivers. It is called the fish of a thousand casts, and for good reason.

What is a huchen?

The huchen is endemic to the Danube basin. It can grow over one and a half metres long and weigh several tens of kilograms. It is an apex predator that feeds mainly on other fish. Dams, pollution and overfishing have made it endangered across Europe, so fishing for it is strictly regulated.

Where do huchen live in Slovenia?

In Slovenia, huchen live in rivers of the Danube basin such as the Sava, Krka, Kolpa, Savinja and Ljubljanica. Populations are small and sensitive, so angling clubs often limit the number of permits and the harvest.

When is huchen season?

The huchen is a winter fish. Fishing is permitted during the colder months, typically from autumn until February, with exact dates set by each district. Cold, overcast days and periods after a small rise in water level are often best. Check the rules and permits for your chosen district.

Huchen tackle

  • Rod: #8–#10, often a two-handed or switch rod for long casts.
  • Line: sinking or sink-tip, to get the streamer down into deep pools.
  • Leader: strong, as huchen strike hard and have sharp teeth.
  • Streamers: large, 15–25 cm articulated patterns in natural or contrasting colours.
  • Clothing: warm layers, thermal socks and fingerless gloves, as temperatures are often below freezing.

How to fish for huchen

Huchen fishing is a game of patience. We systematically cover deep pools, current seams and lies behind boulders. The streamer is fished slowly near the bottom with occasional strips. The take is often sudden and powerful. When a fish hits, stay calm and bring it safely into the net.

Catch and release

The huchen is rare and precious. Many districts are catch-and-release only, and many anglers release huchen even where they could keep them. Keep the fish out of the water as briefly as possible and hold it in the current until it swims away on its own. More in our catch and release guide.
